Boone Creek Photo Boot Camp
Join Photo ShareShops for the Boone Creek Photo Boot Camp Spring 2018! It kicks off April 21st at Boone Creek Outdoors, home of the Canopy Zipline Tour and of Boone Creek, one of the most scenic creeks flowing into the Kentucky River. This photography workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate photographers and spans all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon. You will learn the fundamentals of camera use, care, operation, basic composition and seeing the light. A brief talk about Photo ShareShops’ “Images with Intent” starts the lessons off laying the groundwork for the program to follow.
Please arrive on Saturday morning at Boone Creek Outdoors by 8:30. The road down the the ShareShop location is steep so you and your gear are taken down by 4 wheel drive. The program starts at 9:00 with classroom programs in the comfortable living area of the Boone Creek Outdoors lodge. After lunch, a “mini-sub sandwich buffet,” we go out along Boone Creek and do some shooting, assisted by the ShareShop facilitators. Late afternoon we go back to the lodge to review the days shooting and adding a few more bits to what we’ve already learned that day. Saturday session ends at 6:00. There will be a free “bonus hike” after the session for those that want to get a little more shooting and individual attention in.
The class utilizes the Photzy Snap Cards as a basic tool for learning great photography skills and techniques. The cards will be available in a snazzy workbook form for $30 with space for note taking in the workbook (Ok.. maybe not Snazzy, but a workable workbook!)
Sunday morning, for those that sign up, is the shooting opportunity and zip line experience. We will start with a half hour class at 8:30 in the parking lot on shooting fast motion and then head for the tree tops.
BBQ (not included) around 11:30. All ShareShop participants are welcome (even guests!) This great restaurant is on the Kentucky River less than a mile from Boone Creek Outdoors. It is on old Richmond Road where it crosses the KY river (exit 99 off of I-75 then west.)
After the deliciousness, we’ll head to the lodge for an hour more class and then shoot the balance of the day with one-on-one shooting assistance. The ShareShop will reconvene at the lodge at 5:30 for a wrap up and then adjourn around 6 in the evening.
Boone Creek Photo Boot Camp is held at, of course, Boone Creek Outdoors. This lodge has full facilities including kitchen, dining area, living room with big screen TV (where we will hold our classes) deck with grill, hot tub… etc. It overlooks Boone Creek. There is also an area down by the creek we can setup and do the hands on work to really learn great technique.
The kicker? Optionally, you can experience the Boone Creek Outdoor Canopy Zipline tour at a special group rate! Before and after your flights, while you are are on the ground, you’ll take pictures of others zip lining high overhead. A brief tutorial, prior to the zip line bonus, covers shooting fast moving people. ShareShops Photo Boot Camp will have the best locations for taking these images scoped out for you! Hey, we even have a limited number of action cams we can affix to your helmet to record your zipline experience. Cost for the Sunday Morning Zipline is
$89.00 NO… $75.00 for our ShareShop attendees! Book that directly with Boone Creep Outdoors, and tell them you’re enrolled in the ShareShop Photo Boot Camp.
The only supplied/included meal is Saturday noon. We off a “mini-sub buffet” to build your own sub sandwich. Sunday lunch is an “on your own” meal meetup at Proud Mary’s Honky Tonk BBQ.
Who is best suited for this ShareShop:
This ShareShop is designed for beginning to intermediate level photographers. The program is for folks using a DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens camera system. What we cover will not be of great value to Smartphone or Point and Shoot camera users.
We also suggest this ShareShop for people that are open to sharing and working well with others. Overbearing, know-it-all, and arrogant folks do not work well within the framework of our “ShareShop” concept. Sharing our experience, artistic visions, experimental successes and failures, and good times are key to everyone that participates. Please read and understand the underlying philosophies of Photo ShareShops.
For those that choose to, we wander 15-20 minutes to Lower Howards Creek Nature Preserve for a group hike after the Saturday workshop. This is apart from the ShareShop and is not charged for and guests are welcome! The facilitators are going just to provide extra help with what was learned during the workshop. Think… Wildflowers!!!
This Photo ShareShop is facilitated by Parham P Baker and others depending on the participation. Parham has conducted scores of workshops in the area and not only enjoys teaching but especially enjoys working one-on-one with new shooters.
What you need to bring:
Of course, your camera and any lenses you may have
A tripod (pretty important)
A polarizing filter and a neutral density filter if you have them
Boots or “Aqua Socks” (we may… probably will do some wading)
A sling chair
A great spirit of Sharing experience and inspiration!
What is covered in this ShareShop:
-We will cover basic exposure triangle-
-How to use your internal meter
-How to get great focus
-Hands on depth of field
-Considerations when shooting
-Shooting in bright sunlight
-Shooting in low light
If we have had heavy rain just prior to the ShareShop it is likely the road to the lodge may be impassable, in which case we will reschedule. There are no refunds, but amounts paid can be applied to any Photo ShareShop. If we are expecting only light rains and the road is good, the ShareShop will be held. The Canopy Tour is subject to enough people signing up and to appropriate weather conditions.
Cautions for this ShareShop:
As anytime you do outdoors activities, there are the hazards of bug bites and stings, snakes (including venomous) bites, and other normal forest and outdoor hazards. Even the rather steep and muddy road down to the lodge is a bit hazardous in certain weather conditions. We will likely be wading in a creek, and that poses the hazard both to you as a participant and to gear that may fall in the creek. Please read and understand the liability release for these. This is a required disclaimer for our insurance company and you should understand the hazards of outdoor photography and taking images along or in a creek.
