Reelfoot… the “Quake Lake!”
We hope you will join us for the Fall, 2018 edition of the Reelfoot Lake, Tennessee Photo ShareShop. The birds, wildlife, and amazing landscapes are beyond surreal and magical. The Cypress take on a whole new character in the fall. Come join in this fun and inspiring photography workshop!!!
Reelfoot lake is a shallow lake in far northwestern Tennessee. It was formed by earthquakes in the early 1800s. Not only are its mysterious cypress trees and cypress knees stunning, the huge amount of wildlife will keep your camera clicking! Bald Eagles, Snowy Egrets, Bald Cypress, Pelicans, Blue Herons, Cormorants, Osprey and so much more! Fall finds the migratory birds AND Monarch butterflies passing through right here!
While there are fantastic scenes from the shoreline, our ShareShop takes you out on the lake… three ways for three unique perspectives and opportunities! The larger group opportunity is by super stable pontoon boats in the larger lake area – the Blue Basin. We have exclusive use of the pontoon when we go out, just “us photographers.” (If you are accompanied by a non-photographer, they may go on the pontoon as well.) This is led by a State Park Naturalist who will also relate information about the flora and fauna you are shooting.
Next are the smaller lake boats. Three photographers and an experienced lake guide ply the waters of the middle part of the lake and it’s channels. This takes you into some of the shallower areas of the lake and back into the lily pad filled waters. Ducks abound and Bald Eagles nest are seen in this area.
Along the shore of Reelfoot, especially along the southernmost part, there are numerous public “day use” areas with piers extending out into the lake. Amazing shots of pelicans, feeding egrets and herons, and more can be taken easily from these.
About Blue Bank Resort
This amazing ShareShop is centered at the fabulous Blue Bank Resort. Blue Bank is the most beautiful and well appointed resort on Reelfoot’s shores. It features a swimming pool, 12 person hot tub, butterfly garden, excellent restaurant, fantastic sunsets, rental canoes and kayaks, and great friendly folks. It sits right on the banks of the Reelfoot, and sunset are perfect from shore while enjoying a libation!
Who is this ShareShop most suited for:
This photography workshop is best suited for intermediate up through professional photographers. Beginning photographers are welcome, but many of the techniques which are best suited for Reelfoot might not be familiar to a beginner. (very long shooting, fast shooting, panning, higher ISO settings.) We do plan to have a video out prior to the ShareShop going over these techniques so you will have an opportunity to learn them prior to attending. While our facilitators will do their best to assist beginning photographers, we will not be with you on the lake boat outings where some of the best shots are likely to be made.
We also suggest this ShareShop for people that are open to sharing and working well with others. Overbearing, know-it-all, and arrogant folks do not work well within the framework of our “ShareShop” concept. Sharing our experience, artistic visions, experimental successes and failures, and good times are key to everyone that participates. Please read and understand the underlying philosophies of Photo ShareShops.
We hope you can join us, Parham P Baker and Koral Baker Martin, for this incredible experience. Our family was from Dyersburg TN, about 30 minutes south of Reelfoot Lake. Often on visits, Reelfoot was a destination. We fished, learned to water ski, and just enjoying the mysterious lake. Reelfoot has always had a special place in our memories. We’ve returned frequently of late, bringing our campers, photo gear and a canoe! What wonderful opportunities!
Techniques we will work on:
Shooting on Reelfoot offers a variety of challenges. Sometimes the light is bright and it’s easy to stop motion of the birds and other wildlife. Other times, back in the Cypress forests the light is much lower and involves other techniques. We will send out videos to all participants in advance of the session to keep instruction time onsite at a minimum and shooting time at a maximum. In sessions we will cover:
-Back button focus
-Shooting from boats
-Catching motion and proper depth of field
-Post processing technique
The weather on Reelfoot, like anywhere, is unpredictable. If the wind gets significantly up, boats will not go out. This is not frequent, but does happen. The pontoon trips and lake boat are completely weather dependent. If the lake is not accessible, there are many locations to do amazing shore shooting. There are no guarantees or refunds. If the weather is completely “unshootable” a side trip to the nearby and amazing Discovery Park of America will be substituted and included in the ShareShop.

Please download the brochure about this Photo ShareShop and download the tentative itinerary. You may also download the Liability Release and Medical Information Form. This event is rain or shine. In the event of rain, ALL boat excursions will be in Blue Basin on a covered pontoon boat at the sole discretion of the facilitators.
What those who have attended said:
“Reelfoot Lake was better than I could have hoped. Really enjoyed the scenery. Got too many shots I like. I still have to whittle them down some more. Nice problem, I guess. You did a super job putting together several great adventures on the water and off.”
“Thank you so much for putting together a fantastic photo weekend. Everything was beyond my expectations. I greatly appreciate ALL that you did for us in preparation, and for ALL that you did for us (and me) while we were there. As a first time visitor to Reelfoot I was enamored with the area and all that it offers. I definitely plan on returning (I hope numerous times) now that I am familiar with what is there and places to shoot. The 3 excursions were perfect and exactly what I had hoped for. The accommodations were better than usual for a lakeside resort, and the meals you provided were outstanding. ”
